Crab Apple

Crabapples are small to medium-sized trees, often known for their vibrant flowers and small, colorful fruit. They are closely related to regular apples but the primary difference lies in the size of the fruit. By definition, the fruit of a crabapple is less than 2 inches in diameter. If the fruit is larger, it is classified as a regular apple. The apples also tend to be on the tart side with high pectin content. However, despite these distinctions crabapples and apples share the same genus and are closely related in terms of growth habits and care. Crabapple trees are also known for their ornamental qualities and are often planted for their vibrant fall foliage, and stunning flowers, which bloom over a long period in the spring. These flowers are not only nice to look at but are great for pollinating other apple trees as the bloom time often overlaps many other apple varieties.
